Gentle is a Certified Yoga Instructor in Training. In the spring of 2015, Gentle studied under Hemant Kumar Tiwari M.Sc. & B.Sc. in Yoga (Theory & Practice) from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana University in Varanasi, India. In the fall of 2015, Gentle Ramirez Interned at Abaya Yoga in Dumbo, NY under Aaron Angel. Their 50 YTT completion is expected in March 2021 from the Yoga Teacher Academy under Julianne Arce.
Gentle's space centers Black Trans, GNC, Indigenous, and Non-binary people. They aim to use yoga as a method of resistance to regain a sense of “being in our bodies” that help us to transcend the limitations of gender imposed on us through colonialism. Through yoga, they encourage reclaiming a connection to our bodies in order to facilitate the process of healing and support the development of healthy self-esteem for those who inhabit marginalized bodies, including folks who are differently-abled, neurodiverse, of-size, etc (adapted from Trans Boxing).
You do not practice spirituality to become spiritual. You practice spirituality because you are spiritual. You don’t practice asana meditation in order to grow, develop, or heal. You practice as an expression of the perfection you already are. Beware of the misconception in yoga that there is a certain amount of yoga that you have to do in order to “attain” enlightenment in the future. That commits to the era of “time." Enlightenment is as close to you as your next breath is because it is your very nature. Spirituality is destructive and not constructive in nature. Your work is to stop false identification with the mind and body. You don’t need to heal those things because they are not what you are. You’re work is to remember and embody your Self (Adapted from Nish).
I do not believe in using and teaching mindfulness practices to create a more "productive", "effective", "efficient" global workforce under late capitalism. If the goal of wellbeing and mental health programs is to create a more complaint class of workers (white or blue-collar) who are less likely to fall apart from the increasing demands of capitalism, I want no part. The best teachers send you back to yourself and ask you to listen to where your soul is leading you. We need to pay attention to how Indigenous and ancient spiritual, metaphysical and somatic practices are being inverted to benefit a small group of profiteers. We owe it to ourselves to implement a discipline around self-care and to study the root of our misalignment (privately or with professionals) whilst being careful not to align with language intended to disempower us by fueling a collective lexicon that reinforces unfreedom. Sadly capitalism is an effective tool used to gaslight people into thinking they aren’t working hard or doing enough. So they must learn to be more mindful so we can then be more productive, even though mindfulness should lead to evaluating our priorities & learn to live (Adapted from Natalie Nzeyimana).
